When doing XML-editing, I always use a suitable editor for that. Recently I've been using oXygen XML editor. It has all the features I need, I like it and naturally I bought a license. On a minus side, it is Java-software, and lately I've been disliking Java very much.
A while ago, they released a new version of 15.0. They appropriately informed me about the new version and said to check the upgrade availability. They have a nice reminder -form to check what you purchased from them the last time.
There is one thing they fail to mention. If you purchase today, and don't want to pay extra $100 for software upgrade service, and they release a new version tomorrow, you won't be eligible for a free upgrade. That's how they perceive you, a paying customer, a stupid lamb not to have paid them for a service they don't tell any details about.
There is a huge number of software companies operating on different basis. First you purchase their software. At that point they give you (typically) 12 month upgrade-period free-of-charge. Then at that point, they ask if you'd like their product that much to start paying for a service. You can agree or decline. If you agree, you'll be hoping that they release often enough to get your money's worth. On the other hand, you can choose to purchase updates whenever you feel like doing it. The software company respects you and operates on a honest basis.
I'll be taking my business elsewhere. Any recommendations for a XML-editor?

We offer two options when you buy a license, next to each other: just the license and the license + 1 year support and maintenance (SMP).
Also, when you purchased the license there was an offer to get the SMP option, this pops up as a dialog and you have to say no to that to go on with purchasing only the license.
Even after you purchased you were informed by email again that you did not get the SMP and we recommend you to get the SMP option in order to benefit of major version upgrades.
We offer free minor version upgrades to all our users, and you benefit already of such an upgrade when we released version 14.2 in February.
We also offer free major version upgrades to all users that purchase the previous version within 30 days of a new major version release.
From your message it looks like you just purchased the license a day before our new major release but that is not true, you purchased the license about 6 month before this major release.
Our support team offered you the possibility to get the SMP now as if you have purchased that option together with the license and they would have applied that and give you automatically an upgrade to our later version.
The fact that there is available a license only option allows people that do not want the SMP to pay less. It looks like you are complaining because we do not have only the option with the SMP included but some people want to pay less and keep using that version for a few years and decide to pay for an upgrade whenever they need one. An existing user only needs to buy an upgrade option, not a full license, in order to get access to the latest version.
The license that you have is a permanent license so you can continue to use version 14.2 as long as you want and only if you like any of the new additions enough to justify the upgrade cost then you can use the upgrade option.
I hope things are more clear now and I am sorry again if the information we provided was not clear enough - we will review our website and messages to make the License+SMP more visible and the recommended choice for new users.
Best Regards,

It looks like the company offers exactly what you complained that they don't offer, provides free minor upgrades for far longer than your desired "12 month upgrade-period", and allows you to get a free major upgrade if released within 30 days of your purchase. In other words, they do everything that you said they don't do, and more. I don't see the problem here. Every complaint about their policy was incorrect, yet you say the policy "still sucks". Why does it suck? I'm looking for valid information about their policy, but the faults on this page look wholly invalid.

Also you might use the power of perception to investigate what competition does for upgrades and support. Hence, my comment about sucking.
